The Latest Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 Design is Exquisite
Back to News & NoveltiesParmigiani Fleurier and namesake, Michel Parmigiani, developed a reputation as a restorer and watchmaker with a rare and prodigious talent. Parmigiani Fleurier watches are artisan, luxury timepieces that are beyond comparison to other luxury brands. When Parmigiani Fleurier announced a new design for its traditional dress watch Tonda 1950, watch enthusiasts the world over were excited.
The Italian word “tonda” literally translates to round, which is perfect due to the Tonda 1950’s round case. The number 1950 is the year Michel Parmigiani, the founder and namesake of Parmigiani Fleurier was born.
What’s New About The Latest Tonda 1950 Design?
If you are familiar with previous designs, when you first look at the newest model for the Tonda 1950, you will notice that the Parmigiani Fleurier logo is more prominent and easier to read. It’s not ostentatious; it’s perfect, allowing for better marketing.
Another change to the Tonda 1950 is the removal of a lume in the hands. By removing the lume, the hands are allowed to expand a bit more, creating a clean and less crowded look. You will also note that between the gold hour markers are now golden dot markers that indicate single minute increments. The dials come in three colors: slate, abyss blue, and white.
Aside from these changes, the design for Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 is the same. Before 2017, the Tonda 1950 design was available only in white or pink gold with a few limited-edition exceptions. Then it added steel. The 39mm case of 2019 is stainless steel, titanium, or 18ct rose gold and is 8mm thick. It has a 42-hour life span when left off of the wrist, which is pretty standard. The movement is 2.6mm thick, which doesn’t leave much room for stacked barrel or an extended power reserve. But, because the Tonda 1950 doesn’t have a date window, there is no need for extra power.
The movement’s slim profile is due to the off-centered micro-rotor that’s directly integrated into the main plate. It allows for additional functions like the calendar or moon phase. Its signature high-quality leather strap with an 18ct gold folding clasp completes the watch.
1950s Style
Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 isn’t just an homage to the founder of the company; it’s an ode to the 1950s idea of having a classic dress watch, a point in time many people saw as simpler. Men wore a suit to work complemented with a thin, elegant, yet subtle daily wristwatch. The 2019 updated design is a welcome upgrade to an already beautifully designed timepiece.
The Tonda 1950 is an exceptional watch with great presence without being outrageous. Though the luxury watch industry is alive and thriving, Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 seeks to join the ranks “daily dress watch” for the working, white-collar professional.
